Tenuta di Valgiano

2022 Tenuta di Valgiano

Tenuta di Valgiano is the big one, the estate’s flagship, built for the long haul but with so much energy already. Sangiovese leads, with Merlot and Syrah from 35- to 40-year-old vines, and the proportions shift a little with each vintage: more Merlot when the year runs cool, a little more Syrah when Tuscany turns up the heat. And this isn’t some modern Super Tuscan move. The story goes back to Elisa Bonaparte, Napoleon’s sister and Princess of Lucca, whose French court brought Merlot and Syrah to the area. The grapes ripen on a different clock than Sangiovese, which gave growers a clever bit of insurance when the Tuscan weather didn’t quite cooperate. The 2022 feels ripe at exactly the right moment: wild bush fruit, density without heaviness, and a fine line of tension holding everything together. Used oak brings a polished cocoa note. Powerful, complete, and made for the long road ahead.

"A powerful vintage where the Merlot and Syrah take a more prevalent role in the wine’s personality at the moment, the 2022 Tenuta Di
Valgiano is a deep purple/red color and is expressive on opening with notes of lavender oil, fresh blueberries, rosemary, and turned earth.
Full-bodied, it fills the palate with a youthful plushness at this stage, with a velvety texture and even acidity. It’s going to deserve time in the
cellar and will drink well over the following 15 or more years." -95/100, JebDunnuck.com, Audrey Frick 3/18/2025
