Bertinga

2019 Toscana IGT Volta di Bertinga

2019 Volta di Bertinga is a single-block Merlot cru that showcases the unique character of Gaiole in Chianti. Deep, structured, and elegantly refined, it captures the magic of Merlot on north-facing, low pH calcareous clay soils in Block 10 of the Bertinga vineyard, a rare terroir where this varietal truly shines. Internationally recognised, it ranks alongside the best Merlots of Bordeaux, yet with a distinctly Tuscan soul. Only produced in top vintages, the 2019 Volta di Bertinga swiped the board in a blind tasting against heavyweights like Le Pin, Pétrus, Angélus, Masseto, Galatrona, and L’Apparita, earning 99 points from James Suckling, who called it a masterpiece. Sophisticated, terroir-driven, and built for both power and finesse, this is Merlot with a Tuscan heart and unmistakable presence.

"Lots of lavender and violets on the nose, together with graphite, lead pencil, iodine and black olives. Full-bodied with extreme
class and balance. The ultra-fine tannins are plentiful, yet integrated, and run the length of the wine. A masterpiece. Best after 2028." -99pts, James Suckling

"An exceptionally refined, terroir-driven Merlot. Signature Gaiole nuances of undergrowth, laurel and iron hover over notes of cherry jam, red roses, milk chocolate and cedar. Impressively restrained and racy, with puckering tannins backing luscious layers of varietal sweet fruits. Lively acids and a balsamic touch calibrate a moreish, iron-inflected finish. Organic. Drink 2024-2035." -95 pts, Decanter
