2021 Todi DOC Pottarello

The Pottarello is gracefully poised, suggestive of excellent Chianti but with slightly rounder tannins, a touch broader acidity, and a slightly more sun-drenched fruit profile, buoyed by a generous 15% body that it carries with remarkable ease.

Pottarello translates into “little kid” in Umbrian dialect. It is a blend of several smaller berry’d phenotypes of Sangiovese (80%) with Malvasia Nera (10%) and Colorino (10%). These Sangiovese biotypes with particularly thin tight clusters and much smaller berries than those of its more common Sangiovese siblings make for a higher skin to juice ratio in the fermentation, translating into more color and a denser darker fruit profile, as if poetically invoking the very look of these denser Sangiovese clusters.

The wine undergoes alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks and remains in contact with skins for about 3 weeks, during which time Lorenzo and his sons perform the classic manual follatura (punch downs). After separation from the skins, the finished wine is transferred into French Oak 500L tonneaux where it ages for 12 months before resting another nine months in bottle. Classified as Todi DOC Rosso, Pottarello is the very essence of the appellation.

Appellation:  Todi DOC

ABV:  15.2%

Vineyard:  Pottarello is crafted from estate-grown Sangiovese rows 46–75, selected for their tiny berries and high skin-to-juice ratio. Grown organically at 200–400m on limestone clays, these vines thrive in a dry, warm Mediterranean climate.

Cellar: The wine undergoes three weeks of stainless steel fermentation with manual punch downs before racking to 500L French oak tonneaux. It then ages for 12 months and rests nine more months in bottle prior to being released.

CSPC:  123303

Winemakers Note:  Pottarello speaks identity of our lands, where the Sangiovese provides structure and tannin, the Malvasia adds notes of wild berries and the Colorino just a hint of spice.
