2023 South Rock Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
That seamlessly leads us to the high school quarterback of the grape world, Cab Sauv, that cassis-marbled alpha chad we love. Using that 100% whole berry technique he employs in his Pinot and Syrah, this is a truly exciting style that straddles the easy-loving intoxication of Cab with some serious interest. Aged in French oak (20% new) for over a year, taming its tannins and providing some good grace and structure, this is a wine that doesn’t need a lot of explaining! It’s this kind of Cab grown in this particular area that most commended the Golden Mile Bench to its first sub-GI rostrum.
Region: Okanagan Valley
Appellation: Golden Mile Bench Sub-GI, Oliver, Okanagan VQA
Varietal/Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
ABV: 14.2%
Vineyard: Fruit comes from South Rock Vineyard, the southernmost site on Oliver’s Golden Mile Bench. Planted in 2016 to Clone 169, on a fluvial fan of gravelly clay and eroded mountain rock. Harvested October 5, 2023.
Cellar: 100% whole-berry fermentation, then aged in French oak for over a year, approximately 20% new oak.
CSPC: 152121
Winemakers Note:A warm and consistent season gave us Cabernet Sauvignon vines that produced small berries with excellent phenolic ripeness, leading to a wine that is naturally deep, structured, with firm tannins, balanced dark fruit, and classic Cabernet character that will age gracefully for at least a decade.
